Quite honestly, he looks really good for his age; despite being 43, one would generally guess that he was in his mid-thirties. Six feet tall, with short medium-brown hair and blue eyes. Has a fairly handsome, youthful face, a nice smile, and can make very funny expressions. Well-built and muscular in a natural way, generally defying the common geek stereotype. Wears a pair of wire-rim glasses and keeps himself clean-shaven.
He was dressed for an off-world mission before he arrived, and so he is in military garb. The outfit he arrives in consists of army green cargo pants and jacket with a black shirt underneath, and a black Kevlar utility vest over the jacket. The jacket has an SGC unit patch bearing the SGC logo on the right shoulder with a smaller Air Force patch beneath, and the Stargate Alpha symbol on a patch on the left shoulder. He generally prefers semi-loose, comfortable clothing that can get dirty, esp. when he's working.
He is also wearing black standard-issue combat boots and a Suunto outdoor navigational watch, although since he has arrived, the only parts that work are the part that tells time and the compass.
Personality:
First and foremost, a very nice guy. This is someone who would sacrifice himself for a total stranger (and has) if he thought he could help them, and would throw himself into the line of fire for someone he cares about. He is also very tactful and puts things gently, with the possible exception of his more arrogant or single-minded close friends. Very polite and respectful to people of other cultures. Daniel is not afraid to come forth with even his more outlandish ideas, mainly because he usually knows that he's right, and because he has long since become used to being ridiculed for his stranger theories.
He has a natural curiosity for anything old and/or historical, or having to do with foreign cultures. He has proven to be very adept at thinking outside of the box, and carefully considers solutions for problems that arise instead of rushing headlong into them (with the possible exception of those 'someone-is-immediately-in-danger' situations mentioned earlier).
Daniel is very loyal, honest, and smart (in the areas of both intellect and common sense), with the noted ability to think on his feet in tense situations. He is highly passionate for his beliefs, and most importantly of all, has a great sense of humor. Unless you move historical artifacts without his permission. Then he has no sense of humor at all.
Abilities:
No superhuman abilities, but for a human he is quite adept. Highly intelligent, has a vast knowledge of history, great observer, and speaks 27 (or more) languages, including at least four alien. He has PhDs in archeology (study of really old people and things), anthropology (study of people and humans and culture in general), and philology (study of languages and literature and the structure of languages and literature). Also, he is really, really good at figuring stuff out and thinking outside the box. Has a decent knowledge of computers, although not enough to be bragged about.
Despite being a civilian, being a member of SG-1 has given Daniel a basic knowledge of military (and alien) weaponry, namely the P90, MP5, Zat (alien stun weapon), and the use and detonation of C4. Thus he would be knowledgeable enough to know what to do with a gun if he found one. He is also much more athletic now than he was when he first joined the SGC, due to the physical nature of their missions, and he has picked up on some strategy techniques that may help him stay alive.
In the way of equipment, he was wearing his standard mission gear, including olive-drab BDUs, a black Kevlar vest with many pockets, a knife sheath on his upper leg, and various hands-free gun clips on the vest. Upon waking up in CF Manhattan, he found to his dismay that all of his weaponry and everything in said pockets had vanished. However, the vest is bulletproof and fitted with a flexible ceramic polymer insert designed by the SGC that protects the wearer from damage by the energy blasts from Goa'uld staff weapons. So the vest does provide a heightened amount of protection for his chest area.
Weaknesses:
On a rare occasion, he can be a bit smart-mouthed; he blames this (and is likely correct) as a side-effect of knowing Col. Jack O'Neill for too long. Daniel has a bad habit of letting his passion for life and saving people overcome his common sense sometimes, leading him to dive into a dangerous situation without forethought; and even though he generally ends up being right, this causes severe aggravation in some of his friends/teammates. Occasionally his smartness annoys people if he talks too much on a complicated subject without breaking it down. And he becomes highly irritable and prone to yelling if you pester him while he is frustrated or panicked.
Also, all of his usual mission gear disappeared when he arrived, so he doesn't have his usual survival tools.
Manhattanite or outsider?

History:
Once upon a time, Dr. Daniel Jackson was a very intelligent young professor who's rather ludicrous theories (i.e. The pyramids are 10,000 years older than we thought) kind of ruined his reputation as an intelligent young professor. Then he helped the US Government figure out a big ancient device known as a stargate that ended up being a wormhole transporter to other planets. In that initial interplanetary encounter, Daniel: was accidentally married; discovered that the Egyptian god Ra was an imposter played by a body-controlling snake (Goa'uld) who had taken humans to this planet from earth when he left it centuries ago; and helped Col. Jack O'Neill blow up an alien spaceship. Wonderful introduction to the galaxy, wouldn't you say?
After they freed the displaced humans of that planet, he decided to stay there with his Abydonian wife and learn more about their culture. (See the movie 'Stargate' if you want all that to make sense.)
A year later, Apophis (another Goa'uld) uses the Stargate to kidnap a female soldier on the base, and the stargate is reopened. The military was unaware that the stargate led to any other planets besides Abydos (from their first trip), and reconnected with Daniel Jackson in an attempt to understand where the attack had come from. Daniel's wife and several members of the village were also kidnapped by Apophis, to be made into hosts for the snake-like Goa'uld. Joining them was Captain Samantha Carter, who became a permanent member of the team. They failed to rescue the female soldier or Daniel's wife, who was made into the host of Apophis' wife, but they and the other captive people who were not made into hosts escaped with the help of Apophis' military leader, Teal'c, who could not stand the suffering of others any longer and came with them to Earth. He eventually gained their trust and became a key member of SG-1, the frontline team of the new Stargate Program.
Intent on rescuing his wife, Daniel stayed on Earth and joined the SGC, bringing with him a large cache of gate addresses engraved on the walls of the pyramids on Abydos which allowed them to begin exploration of the galaxy. And thus the now-renowned team of SG-1, and Stargate Command itself, was formed.
Now, 10 years later, much has happened. Apophis was old news three years ago, and they've had to deal with a plethora of other dastardly beings throughout the galaxy, saving the earth several times while still managing to keep the general populace clueless. During this time, Daniel has been a crucial member of SG-1, proving himself to be invaluable despite being the only civilian member of the team. His language and cultural skills have helped form many alliances with other planets of alien races and displaced humans. He helped discover the location of the lost city of Atlantis (which ended up being in another galaxy). And he's learned how to speak Goa'uld, Ancient, basic Unas, and Abydonian, as well as translated innumerable amounts of alien text.
That being said, he's become accustomed to the unexpected. In the very roughest summary of all of his experiences, he's: helped save the world a number of times, died and come back to life an equal number of times, been infected by alien diseases, been captured and released/escaped from alien entities, robo-cloned, married, widowed, navigated alien ships and worlds, observed alien cultures, headed and negotiated alien peace treaties and talks, ascended and DEscended (twice), traveled through time, other dimensions, and other realities, been trapped in at least two virtual worlds, and managed to befriend the rather hard-headed colonel leading their team. Oh, and he's also discovered that in pretty much every alternate reality concerning the Stargate Program, no one knows who he is. Talk about a lack of appreciation.
So you could say that he's not…surprised by things. Or when he is, he generally gets over it. Very quickly.
But all is going well for the SGC at the moment. Presently, the SGC is experiencing some rather nice relaxed duty, having defeated the Goa'uld, the Replicators, the Ori, and pretty much every other galactic evil force they've been scrapping with within the last decade. Then one day, Daniel was walking down the corridor towards the gateroom, prepared for another standard off-world mission, when everything abruptly went black…

...One intergalactic crisis at a time.
